Direct School Admission

The application dates for DSA-SEC 2018 for admission to Secondary One in 2019 is from 7 May 2018 to 2 July 2018.


There are seven different categories of DSA offered by Ngee Ann Secondary School:

      1)    Coding

      2)    Art & Design

      3)    CCA (Badminton)

      4)    CCA (Basketball)

      5)    CCA (Volleyball - Girls)

      6)    CCA (Wushu)

      7)    CCA (Chinese Orchestra)

If you intend to apply for more than one category of DSA, please submit a separate application form for each category.


A.   Application Criteria


DSA (Badminton, Basketball, Volleyball (Girls) and Wushu)

·         Demonstrates strong potential in Badminton, Basketball, Volleyball (Girls), or Wushu;

·         Has represented school in competitions and obtained achievements in zonal/national level;

·         Is medically/physically fit (possesses minimally a Bronze in NAPFA from P5 onwards);

·         Consistently displays exemplary conduct.                   

DSA (Chinese Orchestra)

·         Demonstrates strong potential in Chinese Orchestra;

·         Has represented school in competitions and obtained achievements in zonal/national level;

·         Consistently displays exemplary conduct.                 

DSA (Coding)

·         Demonstrates strong passion for, and motivation in, coding;

·         Possesses computational-thinking skills or basic programming knowledge in Arduino (Sketch) or LEGO     

           Mindstorm; 

 ·         Has participated in local/international coding-related competitions (e.g. National Junior Robotics Competition, 

           First Lego League, National Robopreneur Carnival).

DSA (Art & Design)

·         Demonstrates strong passion for, and motivation in, art and/or design;

·         Possesses basic skills and knowledge in art and/or design-making;

·         Demonstrates commitment and resilience; 

 ·        Exhibits critical and creative-thinking.

C. Selection Process


  • After the application stage, all DSA applicants must attend a compulsory selection trial/test conducted by the respective CCAs or DSA areas.

D.   DSA Commitment

Successful applicants in DSA (CCA) are expected to honour their commitment to the posted CCA for the entire duration they are in school.  

Successful applicants in DSA (Coding) are expected to honour their commitment to attend foundational modules in Lower Secondary and offer O Level Computing as one of their subjects in Upper Secondary.  

Successful applicants in DSA (Art & Design) are expected to honour their commitment to attend foundational modules in Lower Secondary and offer O Level Enhanced Art Programme or Design & Technology as one of their subjects in Upper Secondary.


E.   Important Notes

1.    Parents and students are encouraged to choose schools wisely based on the student’s aptitudes and strengths, bearing in mind the school’s academic and non-academic requirements, and the programmes available to develop the area of talent.

2.    Successful DSA-Sec students are NOT allowed to participate in the Secondary One Posting Exercise to opt for secondary schools. 

3.    Successful DSA-Sec students are also NOT allowed to transfer to another school after the release of the PSLE results, as students are expected to honour their commitment to the posted DSA school for the duration of the programme that he/she is admitted into.

1. How should I apply?

a) Submit the duly-completed application form and relevant documents by 2 July 2018.
b) Applicants are to attend the compulsory selection trial/test/workshop (dates can be found on the school website).

3. How do I know the outcome of the application?

All applicants will be notified via email by 31 August 2018.   

4. What if I cannot make it for the selection trial/test on the stipulated date?

Please email the respective teacher-in-charge.  

5. What am I expected to do during the selection trial/test?  

For CCA (Badminton, Basketball, Volleyball)
-      Applicants are to turn up in sporting attire (any t-shirt, sporting shorts and shoes).
-      Be prepared to play the game.
-      Assessors will be looking at applicant’s ability to play the game and the potential for coaching.  

For Wushu
-      Applicants are to turn up in wushu training attire (any t-shirt, wushu pants and wushu shoes).
-      The conduct of the trial will be as such:
       o        Warm up  
       o        Be prepared to showcase basic moves, splits, jumps etc.
       o        Prepare up to two routines that they are most confident in. Applicants  will be asked to showcase half of the
                 routines.
-      Applicants can bring their own weapons if they are showcasing that routine. If they do not have their own weapons, they should inform teacher in-charge beforehand so that he ca have them prepared.  

For Chinese Orchestra
-      Applicants are required to prepare a 1-3min piece of their choice for the audition.
-      Applicants are advised to bring their own instruments (if any) as they are more familiar with it.
-      However, if they do not have an instrument, especially bulky ones like the bass/cello, they can borrow it from our school. Contact the teacher-in-charge to make the necessary arrangements.  

For Art & Design
-      Applicants are expected to do group and individual work during the 3-hour Art & Design selection workshop. They are not required to bring their art materials as it will be provided by the school.  

For Coding 
-      Applicants are expected to do a Multiple-Choice Question test which tests them on computational thinking skills. Programming language will not be tested.
